When You Grow Up

197311 min 23 sec93 shots

The film asks young viewers what they want to be when they grow up and explains that people work both to provide useful goods and services and to earn money for themselves and their families. Workers are shown using machinery, building cabinets, providing health care, handling office records, and performing transportation-related jobs. These examples emphasize that careers take place in different settings and require skills learned through school, practice, and experience.

Related occupations are organized into “career clusters,” with transportation, construction, and manufacturing used as examples. The film explains that each major kind of work depends on many people with different responsibilities, such as drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, office workers, engineers, surveyors, and carpenters. Children are encouraged to observe working adults, consider their own interests, and take time before deciding on a career.
