Three to Get Ready: A Progress Report from BART

196713 min 42 sec106 shots

This progress report surveys construction of BART’s 75-mile, three-county rapid-transit system through aerial views and closer scenes of workers, machinery, excavations, and completed structures. It explains how 57 steel sections of the Transbay Tube were launched, reinforced with concrete, towed into position, and lowered into a trench beneath San Francisco Bay. At a Napa plant, steel sheets are cut, bent, welded, inspected, and finished as tunnel-lining rings. Other work includes elevated tracks, downtown subways, relocated utilities, and routes designed to share freeway corridors.

A detailed account follows the February 1967 breakthrough of the Berkeley Hills Tunnel after crews had worked toward each other for 446 days. Officials, engineers, and reporters then travel through the joined tunnel, while additional scenes show the developing Oakland subway and a completed test track between Concord and Walnut Creek. The film acknowledges that blocked lanes, detours, and large excavations will increase as construction continues. Its closing message asks residents to accept these disruptions as temporary preparations for rapid transit intended to provide speed, safety, comfort, convenience, and economy.
