Sleep for Health

Using a family’s new baby as a starting point, the film explains that repeated daily actions become habits and urges children to establish a regular bedtime. David and Martha follow quiet evening routines that include washing, hanging up their clothes, wearing loose nightclothes, and preparing comfortable beds with fresh air. As David sleeps, the film describes changes in breathing, body temperature, heartbeat, and muscle activity. A comic dream sequence accompanies the explanation that dreams and turning in bed are normal parts of sleep.

David wakes naturally, has time for breakfast, and remains alert through school and recreation. George, by contrast, stays up late listening to threatening gangster dialogue, struggles to fall asleep, and has difficulty getting out of bed. His lack of sleep leaves him forgetful in class, low in energy during games, and irritable with other people. The closing message tells children that a consistent bedtime makes sleep and waking easier and helps them enjoy their day.
