Out West

Out West is a 1918 silent comedy starring Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, Buster Keaton, and Al St. John, and it spoofs the Western films of its time. At Mad Dog Gulch, Fatty joins Bill Bullhorn, Keaton’s gambler and saloon owner, amid escalating disorder in the frontier settlement.

Much of the comedy unfolds in a crowded saloon, where arguments lead to gunplay, fights, spraying liquid, and a horse being ridden indoors; a woman wearing a Salvation Army hat also appears among the gunmen and patrons. Outdoor scenes show the barren town, horseback action, and characters depicted through stereotyped Native American dress. The closing action combines an absurd furry-legged costume with a smoky explosion at a rocky building, sustaining the slapstick parody through the end.
