Around the Corner

19379 min 30 sec39 shots

This 1937 educational film uses motorcycle riders turning in formation to show why the outside wheels of a vehicle must travel farther and faster than the inside wheels during a turn. A wagon can accommodate this difference because its wheels rotate independently, but an automobile needs to power both rear wheels without forcing either one to skid. The film identifies the differential as the mechanism that allows this to happen.

A working model builds the differential step by step from separate axles, spokes, pivoting crossbars, and then interlocking gears. The demonstration shows how both wheels turn together when unobstructed while one can rotate faster when the other slows or stops. Diagrams and mechanical parts then connect this principle to the drive shaft and rear axle, explaining that a lower central drive permits a lower, roomier car body and smoother gear contact. Closing scenes show an automobile with its rear wheels supported by large cylinders as the film emphasizes the strength and durability of the rear-axle assembly.
