Apollo 10 Mission Report

196919 min 14 sec86 shots

NASA’s film follows Apollo 10, an eight-day rehearsal for a lunar landing that tested nearly every planned operation except the landing itself. Astronauts Thomas P. Stafford, John W. Young, and Eugene A.

Cernan launch aboard a Saturn V, dock the command module Charlie Brown with the lunar module Snoopy, travel to the Moon, and enter lunar orbit. Mission-control scenes, spacecraft views, and images of Earth and the cratered lunar surface accompany explanations of the flight’s equipment and maneuvers.

Stafford and Cernan fly the lunar module to about nine miles above the Sea of Tranquility, test its landing radar, separate its descent and ascent stages, recover from an unexpected movement, and rendezvous with Young in the command module. The crew also photographs possible landing sites before leaving lunar orbit and returning to Earth. Apollo 10 splashes down in the Pacific near the USS Princeton, and recovery personnel carry the astronauts to a helicopter; the closing message describes the mission as the final major preparation for Apollo 11’s planned lunar landing.
